The weekend away with Human Hair was totally swell, we think we love those guys, not only for their musically ability but also for their looks and also for bringing some interesting ideas to the table on the debate of not being able to separate the translators voice and the paratexts from of any translation.

Anyway, thanks to everyone that came out on Sunday to the show we put on, it went swimmingly. Bands were great, lots of backslapping, etc going on, i went home afterwards and rewarded myself by getting laryngitis. That's going wonderful thanks for asking.

Hey hey, so that last post was pretty funny huh? AND i didn't even have to make any of it up... crazy. Although i'm pretty tempted by it, especially the possibility of receiving an email report about what we could be doing to get bigger. One thing we thought of all by ourselves was to get Jen Calleja in the band, you might have seen her at our most recent gigs. So far the response has been "You're much better". So far, so good...

Anyway Jen, whilst she isn't improving our band, likes to keep herself occupied with a plethora of other creative outlets and one of these has been creating and editing a German culture magazine called Verfreundungseffekt (it's a playful pun on the term verfremdungseffekt, coined by Brecht, meaning in very simplified terms as "making strange" or "distancing effect" but also containing the German word for 'friend'. Geddit?). Other members of Sauna Youth and our extended creative family are involved in the contents as well as a load of other fine people. It is finally ready to go and be printed and she has organised an event to celebrate its existence... i'll hand you over to her for the details -

Verfreundungseffekt is a German-English language magazine exploring ‘Germanness’ and ‘The Angloamerican’ designed by Joseph Hales and edited by Jen Calleja. The magazine and exhibition assume cultures to be mythologies created by the tourist or the emigrant from another nation, with this perspective raising questions about the performance, idealisation and stereotyping of nationalities, as well as the possibility and problems of translation and comprehension.

Verfreundungseffekt is a more ethnographic record of the modern-day émigrés moving from the UK to Germany/Germany to the UK/America compared to the academic, over-analysed and generalised accounts of a country’s history and culture. The magazine was formed from an appreciation of German culture and language and a wish to help promote it, and will stand as a document of the individuals who move between the world of the German and the world outside of it.

The exhibition will run Friday 24^th February – Sunday 26^th February, with the Magazine launch from 6pm – 9pm on the Friday and a ‘Curator’s Talk’ at 2pm on the Saturday.

It’s pretty straight forward, we basically come to YOU, ....... we’ll sit down for an informal chat, discuss where the bands at right now, make sense of where you are and then offer out some direction.........

It’s a kinda ‘helping hand’ for bands not sure how to move forwards.......... we can breed a little bit of HOPE, POSITIVITY and DIRECTION into things..........it’s no frills, good solid honest advice to up-and-coming bands that need a bit of guidance.....

We'll email over a report the next day...... like a *summary* of what we talked about and what the band should be doing to get bigger.....

The HOURLY RATE we charge is £50 – and if you take a second hour its half of that, so £25...... so a 2 hour session is £75...... It’s VERY CHEAP and we’re only really covering our costs and time..... (travel is included in the that) .....So it works out about 10 to 15 quid per band-member...... so we’re not out to rip anyone off!

ALSO...... we don’t do contracts.... and no signing of bullsh’t paperwork.... and all we ask is that the band pay in CASH on the day before the session starts. Its a simple as that.

Alumni of many groups (including Facel Vega, The Sceptres, Mock Heroic and No) from the last decade, hailing from around the southern parts of the UK, including Essex, Norwich and South Wales, Satellites make unforgivably loud and dissonant punk that's arresting and inventive, flipping out to occasionally reveal a twisted, dark underbelly. Following a long tradition of outsider hardcore songwriting (cf. Against, Moss Icon and Articles of Faith) their recent cassettes and now 7" single on Milk records has cemented their place as the best punk band in London.

The latest offshoot from Dublin's mighty Crowd Control is The #1's, but unlike the crushing hardcore one may expect, this is definitely a departure. Also hailing from Dublin, and on tour with The #1's, September Girls are an all girl band who play catchy fuzzy garage pop. They put out an impressive demo last year, and although there are a hundred and one bands doing this style right now, the songs definitely stand out.

Oh I know! crazy how many people have birthdays this time of year... selfish really, all frugality goes out the window. I guess essentially the idea is that if everyone spends more money then shops stay open, people keep their jobs and then they have money to spend in shops, which then stay open and the owners give more jobs out, which means people can spend more money in bars then the people that work at those bars and shops can fund whatever sideline they have be it artist, musician, dancer, poet, writer, journalist WHATEVER which we consume and it makes us feel like life isn't just one brutal, grinding day after another, we celebrate our lives full of creativity and music, in bars manned by our peers, spending money, celebrating the fact we're surrounded by artists, that make livings from the bars and shops we shop in...

TOTAL CONTROL came together over shared love of the more unsettling end of punk music: Wire, Devo, the Screamers. Featuring members of Eddy Current Suppression Ring and The UV Race, Total Control have released four singles over the last two years, each becoming increasingly minimal and electronic based, from synth punk to cold wave to primitive disco. To our ears they owe a debt to Gary Numan, Swell Maps, Suicide, The Normal, and Brainiac, but thankfully they're paying that debt by creating something new. The songs are deceptively simple while also provocative. Guitars, bass, drums, synths and vocals. An occasional beat you can dance to and at other times epic bliss that washes over you and you want to do anything but dance. 'Henge Beat', their new LP was recorded in the Australian summer of 2011, the songs a cohesion of sounds from each of their previous singles. Last month saw the band embark on a national US tour with Thee Oh Sees and now they're coming over to the UK to play ATP and this party too.

SAUNA YOUTH throw together garage punk with cryptic concept to glorious effect, moving the poppy pace and attitude of Buzzcocks, Shitty Limits and previous band The Steal into weirder territories. Their songs are catchy, melodic and belt along at speed, sounding to these ringing ears kinda like Career Suicide trying their hand at some Modern Machines numbers. Standout amongst them on their recent self-released 7" is probably the hyper-snotty 'Vacuous Idiot', but they also write songs with a stranger, dreamy vibe that almost sounds like it could've been recorded outside in the rain while some Pebbles band plays a slowdancin' number at a drunken frat hop and the lengthy track on side-b of their record is a spoken word affair, all of which suggests there's perhaps more to Sauna Youth than just three chords and the ability to pen an awesome punk tune.

MICKEY GLOSS is a psychedelic punk group that started in Australia and ended up in London. They play static lullabies full of absurd rants and transient tales. There first album, the independently released 'Indelible Ballad of the Tainted Fur', is a cartoon rock mindwarp. Look out for the band's new 7" flexi on X-Ray Recordings coming soon, let your freak flag fly!

PHEROMOANS are a music band based in the South-East of England. The band played their first gig in January 2006 at Portslade in Sussex. Several gigs followed over the next two years, often in obscure suburban venues, but occasionally including more high profile shows opening for the touring American indie royalty. Reviewing a concert in 2009, the pop newspaper Loud And Quiet Magazine (free) described the Pheromoans as "wholly terrible". Worryingly for the Pheromoans, as the newspaper is given away for free, it meant that literally everyone read it. They soldiered on regardless, and in 2009 the Pheromoans released their first single 'Revamper' on the New York label Convulsive. This single gained a good review, and seemingly encouraged the band to release even more material. This year has seen the Pheromoans release their debut LP, 'It Still Rankles' on Convulsive, which was immediately followed up by a mini 12" album 'My Mind Is On The Anti-Climb Paint' on the Plymouth label One.C. Jackie P has also joined as a sixth member, adding keyboard and violin to recordings that have yet to see the light of day, and joined the band on a small and unsuccesful UK tour. Now they are entering the next phase of their career and although the brand is damaged beyond any hope of repair, they are due to release their next record, 'Darby, Joan & Fosters' this month. See them play this show ahead of their forthcoming album release party at Power Lunches on Saturday 17 December with Please and The Rebel too.

so, we've sold out of the DISTRACTIONS II tapes now, i ended up making 50, it literally took me a whole 2 days to make them. Ridiculous. If you still really want one you can get them from Spastic Fantastic in Germany or from Big Love in Japan (where the proceeds go towards go to victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan)... I only posted them off today so it'll be about a week or so before they even get them and update their shops n that. ok.

Also, we're now sold out of the Chris Pell, R.M. Phoenix, Will Exley, Alicia Raitt and Lucy Jones artist editions of the LISTS 7" and there are only a couple of copies left of the others... so, if you want one get on it. Also the merch is being handed over to CJMURPHY for the next month or so and he has much nicer handwriting than me so you can look forward to some lovely notes from him.

MY GOLD'S BANGLA

"In 2004 in the UK, following complaints from the public about postal carriers causing litter by discarding the rubber bands which they used to keep their mail together, the Royal Mail introduced red bands for their workers to use: it was hoped that, as the bands were easier to spot than the traditional brown ones and since only the Royal Mail used them, employees would see (and feel compelled to pick up) any red bands which they had inadvertently dropped. Currently, some 342 million red bands are used every year."

Since 2006 i've been picking them up, tagging and labelling them. With with dates, words, phrases, memories, locations, cryptic allusions, precise observations, relevant or completely irrelevant information associated with that red rubber band.

It has been, and still is an exercise in obsessive behaviour. My collection currently stands as a document of a 5 year period between 2006 - 2011. Initially collected as totems and omens of good luck, the compulsion turned into the piece itself. The labelling of the mundane, everyday object to imbue it with some meaning and a sense of it's own time and existence.

It was recently exhibited at the Basement Gallery in Brighton, as part of an exhibition about collectors. People seemed to be interested in it, a lot of people asked a lot of questions and a couple of people thought I was a massive fraud. I even got an article in the local paper and interviewed by a weatherman on tv about it. The people who put the exhibition did a great job of hanging the piece...

I had a tape player hanging from the wall with a loop of the song the piece is named after. The mother and daughter that were quite adamant I was full of shit and a fake collector wouldn't even believe that I was in a band, let alone the singer from the tape. A harsh lesson in the fact that if the aesthetics don't match the sonics then you won't be taken seriously. or something...

Anyway, the exhibition went great, thanks for asking. Now, luckily for you we're putting up the piece for sale. It's available from our shop here.

The piece comes with the 300 red rubber bands attached to fishing-wire for ease of display.

Good morning everyone!
It's that time again, YES WAY 3 is upon us. Starting this evening and continuing over the weekend, our festival of underground music from the UK is now in it's third year and going strong. This year the event is taking place at the two-floor Bussey Building opposite Peckham Rye station and served by many a bus, check out our travel info at the end of this message for all the routes.

We have 42 bands performing over the next few days with tonight kicking things off splendidly with DIVORCE, SPIN SPIN THE DOGS, PLEASE, EAGULLS, TROGONS, SILVER FOX, BEN BUTLER & MOUSE PAD and EARLY MAN breaching the flood gates of UK talent. It's going to be joyful and triumphant, we'll have weekend passes as well as plenty of day tickets on the door too for those of you sans credit card etc. Tickets are tremendously good value, with tonight costing £5, and a full Saturday and Sunday's entertainment costing £8. Doors tonight open at 6pm, whilst of Saturday and Sunday they open for lunch at 1pm, live music commences roughly an hour after doors in each instance, with exact times and running orders being announced at the venue each day, come early! Things finish up a little earlier on Sunday taking cues from the working week, so expect bands to finish on Sunday around 10.30pm.

Thanks so much for being a part of this and making it happen alongside us, it's truly humbling for UTR to be working on our 400th show on Saturday so we hope you can join us in celebrations too. YES WAY is a weekend festival celebrating the UK's best and brightest independent art and music.

Building on the success of the last two year's sold out events, it will see 42 bands, representing the length and breadth of the British Isles, perform over two stages at Peckham art hub, The Bussey Building.

We'll have Dalston's Underground Film Club (The Pictures) screening a special compilation of DIY documentaries, music videos and no-future shorts. Some chopped and assembling projections from Charles Chintzer Lai, interpretative canvas wrangling from Tim Hill and much more. A large scale screenprinted Ice Cream Tsunami skyline courtesy of Lydia Donut has been installed and an exhibition is planned of many, many representations of this following promo photo of Mr Randy Newman:

Randy Newman? Yes, Randy Newman. In support of our recent release of our split Please / Spin Spin The Dogs LP whose artwork depicts the Randy above through the eyes of six different members of the band we've now broadened the obsession to everyone. If you'd like to bring your own Randy (artwork etc.), please do, come see us at the door and we'll hang it with the others.

When we first met Stroidy who does Niche Homo we had to put him to bed on a sofa in Jon Mohajer's kitchen. I blame the homebrew. PACKED zine, real interesting interviews, word layout, printed on that weird recycled paper from Footprinters that makes my fingertips ache. Mixtape wars. It's funny, weird and interesting in equal measure. HIGHLYRECOMMENDED.

"Spit on the Major"

Got this from Teodoro when I met him at the resource centre in Brighton, he was printing inlays from his new cassette release and I was printing the sleeves for our 2nd 7"... we obviously both felt pretty punk. He is a super nice, mild-mannered guy and I was taken aback when I first started reading his zine... "I write and speak English as bad as I play any instrument, I'm a horrible musician, but it's true!! Because there are people then they are Liars, they tell you: "Hey I'm a bad Musician" but one day you see them on stage and suddenly they can play their instrument, THEY ARE MUSICIANS!! They told you that they couldn't play but you realize now that they can play, FUCK!! SHIT!!" I actually want to keep typing because it only gets better, hands down one of the best zines i've ever read... So passionate about anarchy, punk and real bad musicians!! Thankfully no pretensions or irony here. It's all hand written & laid out with amazing comics & illustrations with more exclamation marks per page than any other zine i've read. I had literally no idea who any of the bands were but the way Teodoro writes about them made me feel like I should definitely get to know them. HIGHLYRECOMMENDED!!!!

"TEAM magazine"

This is from our buddies Rosie & Phil. This zine totally eschews the punk aesthetic but holds on to the DIY community element, building itself upon the idea of collaboration. It's a beautiful object & the content inside is of a similar high-standard. My brother did the cover and there's work in there from writers, designers, illustrators and photographers like - Joe Hales, Ton Hall, Owen Richards, Andreas Konrath, Katie Scott, Simon Marsham, Jen Calleja, etc..... it's HIGHLYRECOMMENDED!

"No Zine"

Again, this zine is pretty much the polar opposite of Spit On the Major but still looks amazing. There are 6 issues, each one dealing with it's own issue number, that's a bad explanation but it doesn't really matter... Real crisp layout, 2 colour riso-graph printed, which is used is great effect throughout. This zine appeals to so many things I like in terms of the series and consistency of style, it also helps that the work is of a VERY HIGH STANDARD. HIGHLYRECOMMENDED.

SEALINGS
This Brighton-based two piece is irrepressably dour, heroically noisy, and stripped to the bare bones - a hissing drum machine and two jagged, flesh scouring-guitars over which the singer mumbles his indecipherable montone. It's like early Jesus & Mary Chain meets very early Sisters of Mercy but really like nothing else around at the moment.

PEEPHOLES
Katia Barrett and Nick Carlisle take turns singing, drumming and synth-prodding whilst smiling a lot and running back and forth on stage. Their songs, often cloaked in a cloud of echoing atmospherics, throb with raucous beats and jab you in the eye when you're not looking. It's party music for the lost at sea - sometimes primitive, sometimes soaring, but never boring.

New project from Sauna Youth front man Rich Phoenix and Cold Pumas guitarist/vocalist Ollie Fisher. Looped, claustrophobic surges of brittle guitar and shocked drum beats that stack up to create a sound a lot larger than the sum of its parts. This is the second part of Faux Discx's CMYK series of 7"s... These songs are based around the best 3 seconds on Wire's 1976 demo LP. One song directly lifting the riff, expanding and embellishing it whilst singing about going out and having a right laff. The other just taking the section, ill-advisedly looping it's bad quality and sticking a load of Oooh's and Ahhh's and lyrics about going out and being utterly bored. probably. Recorded in our most ridiculous manner to date... Drums from November 2010 (and 1976) from our aborted attempt at out first LP, bass from January 2011, guitars still to be learnt and vocals, samples, etc from last week or something, which is when we all heard it too. Recorded it ourselves & Dan did the art. Black vinyl in a matt, reverse grey-board printed sleeve, limited to 300 copies.

Last weekend we had a great time, thanks to all involved, especially Fair Ohs for having us play. Here i'd probably post some pictures or have a pithy comment (i just looked up what that actually means and it's not what I thought it was at all)... But i don't have any pictures or the mental capacity currently to try and think of anything remotely witty. Anyway, next up in our tour of London we're playing tonight in London at the Everything Sucks club night... it's the basement of a place called Old El Paso near (or on?) Old Street. It's a punk night and they will be playing songs from the likes of -

We're then going to be driving up to Leeds for an all-dayer organised by Dany from Art For Blind records. He's moving to Ireland very soon and is bascially putting on every band in the UK before he goes. It's at the Temple Works in Leeds which is an old Flax Mill located in Holbeck, designed on the Temple Of Horus. Apparently when it was built it was the largest room in the whole world, actually the whole world, and they used to have sheep grazing on the roof. This is the lastest incarnation of the line-up...

Hey,

So tomorrow there is a very important event happening in London. I know in the UK, England especially, there has been a lot of noise in recent months about the coalition government and the cuts that are being imposed by them, all in the name of the ridiculous concept of a "Big Society". One area of the cuts that you might not know about, unless it directly affects you or people you might know, are to something called the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and the Employment and Support Allowance. You might not know about them because they will be affecting a part of society that often doesn't have a very loud voice, and in some cases won't know the consequences of what is happening until it has already happened. Some feel that the government is consciously targeting people with disabilities precisely for this reason, despite the fact these cuts many in fact be completely illegal.

Effectively for many people what the consequences are is losing the ability to be a part of our society, to have the money to support them in leaving the house, to take part in activities which many of us take for granted and play a large part in our everyday lives. This affects people and families across the UK living with conditions like cancer, dementia, arthritis, Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis, sensory impairments, learning disabilities, mental health conditions and physical disabilities. Their everyday lives depend on support that is under threat.

Some stats for you -
The Government’s plans to cut billions from support for disabled people and their families. Their proposals include:
- Cutting 20% from the budget for Disability Living Allowance (DLA). Disability Alliance estimates that over 700,000 disabled people could see their benefits reduced or removed. DLA helps disabled people with the extra costs of disability and without it more disabled people would be pushed into poverty. The cuts could have a knock-on impact on Carer's Allowance, leaving thousands of families even worse off.
- Taking mobility payments away from disabled people living in residential care and children going to residential schools. Cutting these payments would trap many in their own homes.
- Cutting off payments of contributory Employment and Support Allowance after a year to people struggling to get back into work due to disability or serious illness.

The event, which I would encourage you to attend if you have the time, is tomorrow. It is called the Hardest Hit March and it will begin on Victoria Embankment between Horseguards Avenue and Bridge Street and will assemble at 11.30. There will be a rally on Victoria Embankment with speeches between 12.00 and 12.30 before the march sets off. The march will then begin at 12.30. There is more information about it here and here. I unfortunately won't be attending because I will be at work. Supporting 2 bands, The Dancing Rock Queens and the Flash Rockers, to write and record some new songs. These bands are made up of members with learning disabilities and will be some of the people that will be directly affected by these cuts. If the DLA is scrapped then the possibilities of these guys playing in bands, going to clubs, having a social life in general is massively reduced. These cuts devalue the lives of people with disabilities and presume just because someone has a disability they don't need to take part in the things that really make us human, like music, art, friendship, working, being part of a community, going outside... Effectively they have no place in this "Big Society".

"The drawing for ‘LISTS’ came about from thinking about how repeated lines can create knowledgeable space within an area that was previously a blank void. The grid created by these repeated lines, whether regular or irregular, is a way of establishing a framework that we can comprehend and impart meaning and order onto where previously there was only emptiness and fear. Originally I had intended to create a complete list of space within a particular measured area, but due to the nature of the rules I set myself, (within the whole space the drawn lines must each time work together to define a single part of that space that begins and ends at the same point and that must traverse the whole space and may be able to overlap previous partly defined spaces) when I had exhausted all points around the outer limits of the whole space there was always parts of the whole space left undefined. Therefore the final drawing is an incomplete, or failed, list of space. Within our lives, and the rules that we impose and that are imposed upon us, we will never fully comprehend the meaning we seek. We are able to define a personal space of individual beauty but we must accept incompleteness, uncertainty, and failure as an unavoidable presence in our lives."

p.s. i'm not sure of the whole ticketing shebang but when I have gone before I went without a ticket and just went to the main ticketing booth near the roundhouse gave them some convincing story about losing my wrist band (which I neither had, nor lost) and they gave me one, mainly because they're not employed to care, at least I don't think so. Also I went one time driving Drum Eyes and I didn't even get a pass that time but still did the same thing and it worked, but i did end up getting headbutted by a real camden punk (with a safety pin earring and everything) so maybe that was my recompense for ripping off Weston's cider or something.

"LISTS" - ARTIST EDITIONS

Bear with me...

as part of the "LISTS" project we collaborated with 9 artists to produce 9 images, which The Positive Press then screen-printed for an exhibition (which finishes this weekend BTW)...

We then also created 'Artist Editions' of the record we released, these are limited to 10 of each version. (so 90 limited records in total) It consists of the original sleeve with an extra edition tab, hand-stamped and numbered, with a wrap-around riso-graphed poster of the artists image (those of you that own an original 'Teenage Kicks' 7" will know what this looks like) and a cute little sticker on the front.

This record concerns itself with sex, death and the frustrations created by the practical necessities of banal life.

Side A is about desire and detachment. Desire to be detached from the world and detachment through desire. Frustration from being trapped by the weight of the physical self contrasted with the liberation and joy from the physical self. An escape from the tedium, distilling the chaos and confusion of life to a point, a purity and a place free from troublesome thought. The Void.

Side B is the contrast to the fleeting highs and lows; the middle ground, the broken grey. The necessity of dull interaction in everyday life, told through simple language. One song is about creating your importance and stake in the world to prove that your life isn't worthless, which is unfortunately typified by the boring and pointless arguments we are surrounded by constantly. The other song is about lists. We dream of a life that makes sense and so attempt to order and define the chaos, the infinite threads and strands of life. We are thrilled by an apparently inevitable sequence and our ability to create a visual progression to follow.

"Creating order is a survival impulse against the death drive of gravity and entropy - or, at the very least, a mode of making the daunting demands of existing in time and space more manageable. The parcelling of space is an attempt to wrangle the infinite, thereby gaining traction against one's inevitable union with it."

Or just excuses to let the OCD flow because of your complete inability to remember anything that you're meant to be doing.

We recorded these songs ourselves in 2010, Reza smashing his previous personal best and recording his drums in the last 8 minutes of a practice. Lindsay recorded his guitars in the 45 minutes he had in Brighton after arriving and before we had to be at our show with Ruidosa Inmundicia (which was great by the way). Murphy did his parts via Skype from a hotel in Berlin probably and I took about 6 months to finish it all off. I drew the cover and R.M. Phoenix has done the back. It's going to be an edition of 300 7" housed in a 3 colour photocopied/riso sleeve.

We're releasing our second 7" on the 1st of April. It's called "LISTS" and has 3 songs on it. We recorded it ourselves and me and my brother did the artwork, i'll tell you all about it real soon I promise. The current pressing matter at the moment though is letting you know about what we've organised to celebrate our investment in 300 pieces of black polyvinyl chloride.

The first event is on the 1st of April and is the (not so) private view of an exhibition of screen-printed posters of drawings and illustrations which have been created in response (or lack of) to the concept of lists. Organised and curated by The Positive Press the exhibition will feature work by R.M. PHOENIX, WILLIAM EXLEY, DAN REEVES, JAMES HINES, WE THREE CLUB, LUCY JONES, CHRIS PELL, RICHARD ARDAGH & MARK PAVEY AND CHESKA HILL.

These prints will also form part of a series of a limited run of the LISTS 7" which will be available that night and the following night.

This is being held at the Magnum Opus Tattoo shop, 33 Upper North Street, Brighton, BN1 3FG

It's free entry, there will be stuff to drink and The Norwegian Pine Forest will be providing aural delights. The exhibition will then run for the next 2 weeks at the gallery space in the tattoo shop.

The second event is the following night on Saturday the 2nd of April & is an all-ages show. We're going back to the Hanover Community Centre again because we had so much fun there last time. Playing on the night will be -

HEY. We've got a bunch of activities coming up this month, some of which will definitely happen, some just come from our sincere desire and hope that they will come to fruition...

Firstly, we've managed to find ourselves involved in some class A shows, including some north of the M4... wonders will never cease.

Here is the information on the two weekends we have planned -

Saturday 19th Feb - We're playing in Brighton with Saturday's Kids & Kids Return (who I believe are on tour together) and Little Ease, who are planning on being a band for a month or something. It's the new venue under the station called the Green Door Store. I went to the opening night and had my arms pinned behind my back by a bouncer while he threatened to punch me in the face because I, and a number of other people, were trying to intervene in his colleagues over-enthusiastic bouncering, which kinda just involved grabbing people because they were dancing and then punching Rachael from La La Vasquez in the face. So if you're up for fighting some bouncers come down and have at it. It's the place to be.

Sunday 20th Feb - This show is in London in Stoke Newington at a place called Ryan's Bar... It's with a bunch of great bands, like The Love Triangle (featuring Louis from Identity #1), Bird Calls (featuring Max from Leeds), Saturday's Kids (featuring the guys from the night before), Left Leg (featuring Daniel Day Lewis), Black Mamba Beat (featuring Glenn from the South Bank 7) & Good Throb (featuring Bryony from the internet). It's starting around 3/4 o'clock and you will be guaranteed a good time.

2nd one is the one up north...

Friday 25th Feb - This is in Nottingham, we're playing in a recording studio called Stuck on a Name Studios. This is being organised by Joe from La Boite Diabolique, who are playing. Also playing is a band called Pyramids and hopefully Bruce & Carl from the Hipshakes. Joe is going to let us sleep there & do some recording the next morning... so expect either some covers or us wanking around on my sampler for an hour being put out on tape in the near future. It's donations and bring your own booze. BARGIN.

Saturday 26th Feb - This is in Leeds and is a house show at Jon's Mohajer's house. It will be with La Boite Diabolique and hopefully Nope. That's all I can tell you right now. I imagine it'll also be donations and BYOB. DOUBLE BARGIN.

Sunday 27th Feb - We're playing in Leamington Spa at a local arts organisation's new space called Hybrid Arts. This is with La Boite Diabolique too (this will be the third date, who will make the first move?) and some other bands which i'll probably find out about soon enough. It looks like a real nice set-up and Steven the promoter sent us this important message recently too - "We have 5 projectors at the venue available to use so no worries about bringing one." TRIPLE BARGIN.

The other stuff is - receiving the test presses back for the LISTS 7", confirming all the artists involved for the LISTS exhibition, finishing off the guitars & vocals for our album and starting the funding applications for the DREAMLANDS installation.

Fellow co-conspiritor and collaborator R M Phoenix is delivering his first visual display of high concept abstractions this coming weekend. His work is an exploration through conflicting forms and ideas, exploring the use of simple, minimal space and complex compositional tools, harnessing the potential tensions derived from the combination of the two. He is attempting to create order on the canvas through tight compositional grids whilst allowing loose, fluid, painterly gestures to create a friction on the canvas. Echoing Howard Hodgkin & Tomory Dodge's bold powerful brushstrokes and the purity and clarity contained with Robert Ryman's white paintings, he channels Bertolt Brecht's Verfremdungseffekt to create a distancing between viewer and subject; an obscuring of what lies beneath the stark, bold subtleties in much of his work. Reflecting his own studies into mass genocide and the complexities of human nature, he is exploring the dialectic between violence and beauty, understanding how abstract art can be at all relevant in an uncertain and often destructive world.
